Morning has Broken – Marina's song
On Nov. 26, 2008 Janaia Hutzal’s entire life tragically changed; when morning broke her daughter, Marina Jane McQuaig, only eight years old, did not survive the night. Janaia believes her daughter's brain damage and epilepsy was caused by non-informed medical consent – a cause she took on many years ago. At the time, Janaia was going through a divorce, she had not worked outside the home in almost a decade, the stock market was crashing and she had two other children to raise and care for in a city she had yet to call home.
All of this left her asking, “Who am I and how am I going to survive?”
Over 15 years of writing and 20 of practicing holistic wellness, while studying the positive effects of maintaining a healthy ecosystem that includes all seven aspects of wellness, taught Janaia that knowing and honouring one’s true essence is the first step to finding the answer to “who." Through her journey, she also discovered the honour of being alive with vibrancy and alignment, which is the “how."
There is no word nor title for a mother who suffers the loss of a child, yet so many mothers have. The trauma that a she endures while helplessly watching a child suffer from brain injury affects every part of her life and her family as a whole. The positive part of her own journey is that she has developed concrete skills to support others on their own "journeys to the rise," simply by planting and sharing seeds of hope for healing.
